Virginie Velu - International Women of RC

From racing on track to creating RC media on the internet, Virginie Velu is another great women for our sport - so let's say hello!

How did you get started in RC?
I began RC racing when i was 10 years old (i'm 32) with my father in 1/10 electric buggy, Tamiya Super Astute. One year later, he gave me a 1/8 nitro buggy, a Mugen Super Athlète and i loved it ! I drove 15 years in nitro, then electric and this year, i'll drive in nitro 1/8 buggy to do regional and French nationals races.

Racing cars is traditionally a male dominated activity - did you find RC a welcoming environment to join? When I began, I was really young so men encouraged me a lot. I think it's easier when we begin as kids. I'm not really "girly" so I love spend time with males... ahaha! Sometimes, I met macho men but we "battled" on track really friendly! I think our passion is really open about girls, and our passion needs a "woman's touch" !

Would you like to see more women in the sport?
Of course! I think we need more communication about our passion to see more woman, and to communicate outside our community. In France, we see girls sometimes but they don't stay long. Why not to create a female championship ?

What would you say to any women reading this considering getting involved?
Come on! We meet extraordinary people, we can travel all around our country, Europe and all around the world ! Spend weekends outside, talking with a lot of people, discover, fighting on track, mechanise, have a fun time and totally clear your mind when you drive!

Finally, as it's International Women's Day. Tell us a woman you look up to... Inside RC: Ronda Drake! Outside RC? My mum of course!
